Thailand Masters Badminton: Sai Praneeth and Sameer Verma will headline action in the first round of the Thailand Masters on Wednesday, 1st February 2023. Both the players will be playing in their first tournament at the BWF Tour this year. While Praneeth faces Denmark’s Mads Christophersen, Sameer Verma will be up against China’s Li Shi Feng. The other players who will be in action on the day are Priyanshu Rajawat, Mithun Manjunath and Kiran George. In the Women’s Singles, Asmita Chaliha and Anupama Upadhyaya will face each other. Sameer Verma vs Li Shi Feng
Sameer Verma, who has slid down to World No.51 in the rankings will play his first match this year on Wednesday. He will face China’s Li Shi Feng in the first round of the Thailand Masters. Sameer’s best performance last year was a quarterfinal finish at the Swiss Open. He failed to go past the second round in the other tournaments he played.
Li Shi Feng meanwhile is ranked 23rd in the world. He made it to the quarterfinals at the India Open this year. He also participated in the Malaysia Open and Indonesia Masters but bowed out from the first round. He enters the upcoming contest as the favourite.
Sai Praneeth vs Mads Christophersen
Former World No.10 Sai Praneeth too is aiming to climb his way up in the rankings. He will feature in the main draw of a tournament for the first time this year. Praneeth will be up against Denmark’s Mads Christophersen in the first round of the Thailand Masters.
Mads Christophersen will be playing his first tournament in the BWF Super Series this year. The World No.53 last featured in the Estonian International in which he made it to the quarterfinals. Praneeth is a higher-ranked opponent in the contest and aims to make it to the second round.
The other Indian players who will be fighting it out in the first round are Mithun Manjunath, Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George. Mithun Manjunath, who is ranked 42nd in the world is in the first quarter of the draws. He faces fifth seed Kenta Nishimoto in the first round.
Kiran George is the 43rd ranked player. He begins his campaign by facing Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia Hao in the first round. Priyanshu Rajawat, who made it to the main draw at the Indonesian Masters will face South Korea’s Heo Kwang Hee in the first round.
Anupama Upadhyaya vs Ashmita Chaliha
Anupama Upadhyaya and Ashmitha Chaliha are the only representation from India in Women’s Singles. However only one player can make it to the second round as both the players will be up against each other in the first round. Upadhyaya will be making her debut in the tournament. She is ranked 65th in the world.
Ashmitha Chaliha will be playing her fist tournament on the BWF Tour this year. She is the 52nd ranked player and will look to defeat her compatriot in the first round of the Super 300 event.
Women’s Doubles
In the Women’s doubles, Simran SInghi and Ritika Thaker are the only players remaining representing India. They will face China’s Liu Sheng Shu and Zhang Shu Xian in the first round.
Mixed Doubles
India’s eigtth seeded pair Tanisha Crasto and Ishaan Bhatnagar will begin their Mixed Doubles campaign. They will be up against Thailand’s unseeded Makkasasithorn/Korepap duo.
Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa meanwhile will face a tough challenge from fifth seeded Indonesian pair Kusharjanto and Kusumawati in the opening round. The other Indian pair in the Mixed Doubles is Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy. They will face Canada’s Lineman and Wu pair.
