WPL rules to qualify for the playoffs

Playoffs are scheduled to commence from March 24 onwards. The format for WPL 2023 is not like the one currently followed by the Indian Premier League (IPL). While a total of four teams (out of ten) qualify for the playoffs in the IPL, the WPL will see only three teams (out of five) qualify for the playoffs.

How the winner will be decided

The grand finale of the inaugural edition of WPL will take place at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, on March 26 (Sunday). The team which tops the points table after the end of the league stage directly qualifies for the finals. This means that the table-toppers would not be required to play the qualifiers to book their grand finale berth.

Thus, the first match of the playoffs will be the eliminator, which will take place between the second and third-placed teams in the points table. The teams which finish in the fourth and fifth spot in the table get eliminated.

What every team needs to do

Mumbai Indians: Harmanpreet-led team has won five games out of six to qualify for the playoffs. Despite losing to UP Warriorz, they are still on the top with 10 points. However, MI are fighting with DC for the Top spot and secure the final spot. Essentially, MI vs DC will be the deciding factor on who get the top spot.

Remaining matches:

  • March 20: vs Delhi Capitals
  • March 21: vs RCB

Delhi Capitals: The Meg Lanning-led side have also sealed their playoff spot despite a loss to Gujarat Giants. But they are also in a shoot-off for the Top spot with MI. A win against MI will all but secure them the final spot. DC are 2nd with 10 points only behind MI on NRR.

Remaining Matches:

  • March 20: vs Mumbai Indians
  • March 21: vs UP Warriorz

UP Warriorz: Warriorz have had a mixed season till now. They have played 6 matches and have won three and lost as many. But with RCB and Gujarat Giants trading blow, UPW are best positioned to claim the 3rd spot. Alyssa Healy-led team are third with 6 points. However, their biggest challenge will be against DC as well as Gujarat Giants.

Remaining matches:

  • March 20: vs Gujarat Giants
  • March 21: vs Delhi Capitals

Gujarat Giants: In absence of Beth Mooney, Sneh Rana-led team has ebbed and flowed. But a loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore has only made the battle for 1 spot more interesting. At the bottom of the Points Table due to poor NRR, Gujarat Giants are still in the race. But they have to beat UP Warriorz in their last game and hope that UPW also lose to DC. However, that won’t guarantee them a spot. If RCB win against MI, they will qualify. The best hope for GG is to hope that RCB lose to MI and DC beat UPW.

Remaining Fixtures:

  • March 20: vs UP Warriorz

Royal Challengers Banglore: After five losses, RCB have bounced back with two consecutive wins. With two of those wins, they have kept their hopes alive. They are 4th with 4 points from 7 games. But their fate now hangs in the balance. They will have to win against table-toppers Mumbai Indians. Smriti Mandhana & Co will also have to hope that UP Warriorz lose to Gujarat Giants. But RCB will have to win big against MI.

Remaining Fixture:

  • March 21: vs Mumbai Indians
