Kiran George stunned World No.9 Si Yu Qi with a straight game win in the first round. The World No.59 Indian will aim for a similar show in the second round as he faces another Chinese opponent in Weng Hong Yang.

Weng Hong Yang entered the tournament after finishing as runner-up at the Malaysian Masters last week. The Chinese began his campaign in Thailand with a 21-8, 16-21, 21-14 victory against Kidambi Srikanth in the first round. He will be facing Kiran George for the first time in his career and enters the upcoming contest as the favourite.

Lakshya Sen vs Li Shi Feng

Lakshya Sen clinched a come-from-behind 21-23, 21-15, 21-15 win against Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu-wei in the first round. The Indian will next face a challenge from fourth seeded Li Shi Feng of China.

Li Shi Feng is ranked World No.12. He also had to play three games against Cheam June Wei in the first round. Shi Feng is aiming to reach his fifth quarterfinal in the tour this year. Lakshya Sen meanwhile last played in a quarterfinal at the Indonesia Masters way back in January this season. Lakshya Sen leads the head-to-head record 3-2 against the Chinese.

Women’s Singles

Ashmitha Chaliha vs Carolina Marin

Ashmitha Chaliha defeated her compatriot Malvika Bansod in straight games to enter the second round. The youngster now is set to face former World No.1 Carolina Marin, who is seeded fourth in the tournament. Chaliha entered the tournament as a qualifier and made it to the main draw.

Fourth seed Carolina Marin faced a qualifier in Pitchamon Opatniput in the first round. The Spaniard sealed a 21-17, 21-13 victory and aims to continue a similar show against Chaliha in the second round. Both the players face each other for the first time.

Saina Nehwal vs He Bing Jiao

Saina Nehwal made it to the second round after clinching a dominant 21-13, 21-7 win against Wen Yu Zhang in the first round. Saina is aiming her maiden appearance in the quarterfinal. She faces China’s third seed He Bing Jiao in the second round.

The third seeded Chinese started her campaign with a straight game win against Putri Kusuma Wardhini. He Bing Jiao is aiming her first win against Saina. Both the players have met twice in the past and Nehwal leads the head-to-head record 2-0.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty vs Bagas Maulana/Mohammed Fikri

Top seeded Indian Men’s Doubles duo began their campaign with a 21-13, 18-21, 21-17 win against Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard. They next face Indonesia’s Muhammad Fikri and Bagas Maulana. The Indonesian duo also had to play three games in the first round against Chiu Hsiang-chieh and Yang Ming-tse.

The World No.4 Indian pair have a 3-0 head-to-head record against the Indonesian duo. They last met earlier this year at the Malaysia Open and the Indian pair won the contest in straight games.
