“Afghanistan’s never going to be taken lightly ever again”: Coach Trott eyes Australia next after knocking out England
Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott vowed that no team will take the side lightly hereafter, following the upset handed to England. Shahidi and co. clinched a 8-wicket win on Wednesday to knock out the 2019 World Cup champions from the Champions Trophy 2025. Afghanistan will face Australia next in their fixture in what will be their final group stage match on February 28 in Lahore.
Afghanistan won’t be taken lightly ever again: Trott
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Trott said that in the past, sides would have probably thought playing against Afghanistan would have been easier than squaring off against a historic Test nation. He categorically stated that Shahidi and co. will never be taken lightly, especially after what happened in the 2023 ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. The head coach immediately shifted his focus to the game against Australia, noting that after the win against England, Steve Smith and co. will not be taking the contest against Afghanistan lightly.
“What happened in the World Cup, T20 World Cup, and [now], I say this to the players: Afghanistan’s never going to be taken lightly ever again.
In the past, perhaps people would have seen the fixture and thought it was a little bit easier than playing a historic Test nation. But in this format, in these conditions, I don’t see that. I see every game that we play is going to be competitive and every game we go into I expect to win. Australia aren’t going to take us lightly,” Trott said.

“Since I’ve been coach we’ve played against Australia three times and we’ve been in the game each of those games. I’ll tell the players to enjoy tonight. I’m going to make sure when they wake up tomorrow, they’re ready for Australia immediately. The focus is on Australia. That’s how the players are going to be and that’s what I’ll tell the fans,” Trott added.
