The same goes for IPL franchise owners, who can be considered fans—perhaps even bigger fans, since they invest tons of money in their teams.

Speaking of LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka, he is well known for expressing his emotions on the ground, whether in joy or frustration. Once again, he is making headlines, but this time, as a happy owner after his team thumped the dangerous SRH. What’s gaining attention is that he was seen hugging Rishabh Pant at the same Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, where just last year, he was seen confronting, or rather, scolding, then LSG captain KL Rahul. His emotional shift is now the talk of the town. So, why not look back and see what happened then and how things have changed now?

When anger took over Sanjiv Goenka

The given visual is still fresh in the minds of many cricket fans. It was IPL match No. 57 of Season 17 when we saw Sanjiv Goenka publicly confronting KL Rahul out of frustration over the team’s performance.

The incident took place after LSG suffered a heavy defeat against SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Chasing a target of 166, SRH reached the victory line in just 9.4 overs, winning by 10 wickets. Following this crushing loss, the post-match confrontation between Goenka and Rahul sparked widespread discussion among fans.

That season, nothing really went well for LSG, as they finished seventh in the standings. Eventually, KL Rahul was released later that year. Although the confrontation was seen as a heat-of-the-moment reaction, Goenka later invited Rahul for dinner after that incident. Some believed this was just an attempt to calm the criticism he was receiving, while others saw it as a nice gesture by the LSG owner.

Warm hugs for current LSG captain Rishabh Pant

Cut to now, Sanjiv Goenka clearly showed a heartwarming gesture towards Rishabh Pant after he led his team to a dominant victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the very same ground. It’s fair to say that LSG has now buried the ghosts of last season’s humiliating loss.

LSG captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that many thought was the wrong move given SRH’s strong batting form. However, SRH struggled to find momentum this time. Although they managed to push their total to 190 runs, it wasn’t as imposing as expected.

When LSG came to bat, they chased down the target in just 17 overs, losing five wickets along the way. The start wasn’t ideal, as Aiden Markram departed for just 1 run. But then, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh took charge, smashing SRH bowlers all over the park. Both batters scored consecutive fifties, putting LSG in a commanding position.

Although LSG lost a few wickets towards the end, they comfortably crossed the finishing line and won by five wickets.
