DRS Aug 1: Chahal opens on divorce, Rishabh Pant won’t be missed & KL Rahul to KKR?
The all-important decisive fifth Test between India and England has started. Day 1 was dominated by rain, which left fans short of 26 overs. Regardless, the rest 64 overs saw scintillating cricketing action between bat and ball. The English pacers, despite the batters’ hard work, managed to take six wickets. KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan all fell despite starts, but Karun Nair made sure he saved his sinking ship with a much-needed fifty. Apart from this, IPL trade rumours swirled once again, with now KKR quite keen on having KL Rahul in their squad. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal cleared air around his divorce with Dhanashree Verma and even stated that he had suicidal thoughts in his mind during that phase. Catch all this and more, including about Rishabh Pant below.

Chahal had suicidal thoughts….
Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up on the darkest phase of his life following his divorce from Dhanashree Verma. The leg-spinner revealed he battled depression, sleepless nights, and even suicidal thoughts after being falsely accused of cheating. “I had suicidal thoughts… I used to cry for two hours and sleep for only two,” Chahal said on Figuring Out with Raj Shamani. He slammed the rumours, insisting, “I have never cheated in my life.” The pair, married in 2020, legally divorced in March 2025. He got extremely candid, even crediting his friends, including RV Mahvish for taking care of him.

KL Rahul to KKR at IPL 2026?
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly eyeing KL Rahul in a potential trade ahead of IPL 2026. Rahul, who scored 539 runs for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025 after joining them for ₹14 crore, could be a key signing for KKR, offering both leadership and wicketkeeping options. With KKR lacking an Indian wicketkeeper and finishing 8th last season, Rahul’s inclusion would address multiple gaps, especially after releasing Shreyas Iyer and appointing Ajinkya Rahane as captain. However, DC may be reluctant to trade their leading run-scorer, making this a move to watch closely in the lead-up to IPL 2026.

Karun Nair saves his Test career
Karun Nair has revived his Test career with a gritty half-century on Day 1 of the fifth Test at The Oval, ending an eight-year wait since his iconic 303 in 2016. Coming in at No. 5 with India in deep trouble on a rain-hit, overcast day, Nair weathered relentless swing and constant interruptions to steady the innings. Dropped for the fourth Test after poor form, he earned a recall following Rishabh Pant’s injury and grabbed his chance. Batting on 52*, Nair now faces a crucial Day 2 alongside Washington Sundar, with India needing stability.

DPL won’t miss Rishabh Pant?
Purani Dilli 6 will start their DPL 2025 campaign against Outer Delhi Warriors on August 5 without Rishabh Pant, who is sidelined with a foot injury requiring six weeks of recovery. Despite retaining Pant for ₹21 lakh, captain Vansh Bedi confirmed the team was unsure of his availability even before the injury. Pant had featured in just one game last season, with Purani Dilli still reaching the semifinals. Bedi expressed confidence in the squad’s strength, stating they have planned to field their best XI regardless. While Pant’s presence was a boost last year, Bedi believes his absence won’t significantly impact their title hopes.

Team India unhappy with England?
Team India have expressed dissatisfaction over the ball-change protocol in the IND vs ENG Test series, particularly during the third Test at Lord’s. After the ball lost shape just 10 overs into England’s first innings, umpires replaced it with one reportedly 30-35 overs old, claiming no suitable 10-over-old ball was available. India felt disadvantaged, arguing the softer replacement reduced their effectiveness. They even requested to continue with the deformed ball but were denied. With five ball changes in that innings alone and frequent issues with Dukes balls, India have urged ICC intervention, calling the rule unfair.

Shubman Gill creates history!
Shubman Gill has surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 46-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series. Gill took his tally to 733 during the fifth Test against England at The Oval, overtaking Gavaskar’s 732 from 1978/79. The 25-year-old has been in sublime form, scoring four centuries in eight innings, including a career-best 269, and could also break Gavaskar’s record for most runs in a series by an Indian (774). Gill needs 20 more runs to become the top run-scorer in an India-England series and 80 to become the first Asian batter with 800 runs in a series.
