Asia Cup squad updates

The BCCI will announce India squad for Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, August 19. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar will have to brave rain in Mumbai, which has a red alert, and will address the press conference at the BCCI headquarters at 1:30 PM.

The BCCI will have to take a call on whether to pick Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal and upset the current combination or continue with Abhishek Sharma-Sanju Samson for the time being. Picking Jaiswal-Gill will also be a concern as India will take on West Indies in a two-match Test series just three days after the Asia Cup final on September 28. Shreyas Iyer could also miss out, while Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead the pace attack. Asia Cup 2025 will also begin the countdown for the T20 World Cup 2026 with 18 matches to go.

Ishan Kishan-Akash Deep out of Duleep Trophy opener

However, there is bad news for fans. Ishan Kishan, who was supposed to lead the East Zone in Duleep Trophy, will miss the opener against Shubman Gill’s North Zone on August 28. Kishan suffered an injury while riding in England during his brief County stint.

Akash Deep will also miss the match for the East Zone. He has been advised to rest following the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. As Akash Deep is likely to make the squad for the Test series against West Indies, his workload management plan has kicked in. As per an IANS report, Akash is also struggling with a back injury. The Bengal pacer bagged 13 wickets on the England tour, including his maiden fifer.

‘Pay Bumrah to skip IPL’

As former cricketers and fans debate over the logic behind resting Jasprit Bumrah during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has some advice for the BCCI. He believes pacers like Bumrah should be managed properly before or after a Test series and not during. He wants the BCCI to rest Bumrah from the IPL before a five-match Test series and compensate him for the time off. It would allow Bumrah to play the entire series without needing workload management during the series.

Sarfaraz Khan scores ton in Buchi

Back in the domestic grind, Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan smashed a 92-ball century in the Buchi Babu Trophy against TNCA XI. Sarfaraz scored 92 against England Lions on tour of England. But he could not make the India squad for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. While he is in the fray for the IND vs WI Test series, his main assignment will be Duleep Trophy for the West Zone. If he does well, could make a comeback to India Test side.
