Sanju Samson ideal to take CSK mantle from MS Dhoni ahead of IPL 2026?
For nearly two decades, MS Dhoni has been the heart, mind, and soul of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was more than their leader. A true enigma in the state and a talisman. The decision-maker in tense moments, their finisher with the bat, and their safe pair of gloves behind the stumps. Under his leadership, CSK lifted the IPL trophy five times and became one of the most successful franchises in cricket history.
But as years have gone by, one question has always remained in the back of everyone’s mind. And that is who could be an ideal replacement for Thala?
A true legacy for MS Dhoni
CSK have tried to script life after Dhoni before. Ahead of IPL 2022, Ravindra Jadeja was handed the armband, but the experiment collapsed so badly that Dhoni returned mid-season. The following year, the baton went to Ruturaj Gaikwad. But as fate would have it, Gaikwad was injured mid-season in 2025, and the yellow brigade turned, yet again, to the man they trust most Dhoni.
While his leadership couldn’t change course of the season much, the fans had that nostalgia back watching Dhoni for toss again.
The problem isn’t just about leadership. Dhoni’s role as wicketkeeper-batter has been equally vital. Across 278 IPL matches, he has amassed 5439 runs at an average of 38.30, striking over 137, and has delivered countless game-turning moments. Beyond the numbers, he’s been a brand magnet and has been synonymous with CSK’s identity itself.
Sanju Samson a natural successor?
The IPL rumour mill has been buzzing. Sanju Samson, Rajasthan Royals’ skipper since 2021 and their leading run-getter, could be on his way to Chennai. A disastrous IPL 2025 season for RR, coupled with injuries, absences, and whispers of dressing-room rifts, hasn’t helped.
Former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth has thrown his weight behind the idea. “Sanju is a brilliant player and very popular in Chennai… I’ll be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave. He’s the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can maximum play this season, maybe not the year after, and then you can have a smooth transition,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
Sanju’s versatility makes him a perfect CSK fit. He could open or anchor at No.3 alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ayush Mhatre. More importantly, his wicketkeeping frees CSK from the Dhoni dependence. The captaincy question is trickier with Srikkanth himself believes Gaikwad should continue leading, at least for now.
