‘Neche khela kar chup chaap’: When Rohit Sharma mocked Harshit Rana’s six-hitting abilities
India cricket team pacer Harshit Rana recalled an incident during the Champions Trophy 2025 where he was mocked by captain Rohit Sharma. After making his debut in the 50-over format in January, the Delhi fast bowler was also picked in the squad for the marquee event. Although he did not get to bat in any of the matches, Rana revealed that the Hitman had taught him an important lesson during a net session – with a hilarious catch of course.
A typical Rohit-style schooling for Rana
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Rana recalled that Rohit had told him that the team was very well aware of his ability to hit sixes but wanted him to play safe. The pacer revealed that the Hitman had taught him that any amount of runs scored b= by lower-order batters would be helpful for the team and that their role was also important.
“During one of the training sessions for the 2025 Champions Trophy, I had just walked out after hitting in the nets. While I was removing my gear, he walked to me and said: “Bhai, hum sab ko pata hai tu chakke maar sakta hai. Tu pehle neeche khela kar chup chaap.” [We all know you can hit sixes, but you first play safely to begin with.] He impressed upon me the important role the lower-order batters play and that the runs I make will eventually be helpful for the team,” Rana said.
Rana did not get a chance to bat in the two games that he did feature in the Champions Trophy. He finished the tournament with 4 wickets to his name, three against Bangladesh and one against Pakistan. Rana, who has expressed his love for batting in the past, reiterated the same.
“I love to bat. I don’t feel like I can’t bat. In domestic cricket for Delhi, I have felt that we have won due to my batting and that gave me that inner confidence that, yes, I can bat,” Rana added.
