Chamari Athapathathu and Co fail to weather storm, Sri Lanka crash out of Women’s World Cup 2025

Sri Lanka’s first chance at hosting a Women’s World Cup ended on a sour note on Friday. The co-hosts crashed after a wash out in their final game of Women’s World Cup 2025. Considered dark horses due to home conditions, the Islanders failed to make much impact, partly down to the Colombo weather.

In 7 games, Chamari Athapathathu and Co managed just a solitary victory, a 7-run win over Bangladesh. They suffered three washouts in Colombo, all but ending their pursuit of a semi-final spot.

Sri Lanka’s batting malaise, Bowling shows promise

The Lankans’ batting proved to be their Achilles’ heel throughout the tournament. While there were flashes of individual brilliance, most notably Hasini Perera’s gritty maiden international half-century (85) against Bangladesh, the unit failed to fire in unison.

Captain Athapaththu, a player known for her explosive batting, couldn’t consistently convert her starts into the match-winning scores the team desperately needed against top-tier opposition like South Africa and India.

Their bowling, a traditional strength, showed more promise. The Sri Lankan attack, particularly in their opening fixture against a powerful Indian line-up, demonstrated they could trouble the best. However, the rain-affected conditions often neutralized their spin threat, leaving the seamers with a heavy burden.

Rain washes home advantage

The three abandoned matches against Australia, New Zealand, and their final scheduled game against Pakistan will be a major point of contention for the Sri Lankan camp. These fixtures, particularly against fellow semi-final contenders, represented lost opportunities to gain crucial points.
