Pat Cummins confirmed to miss Ashes opener against England, Australia provide injury update

Australia cricket team have been dealt with a blow as Pat Cummins will not be taking part in the Ashes opener against England that will start from November 21. The all-rounder has been sidelined with a lumbar bone stress which was discovered earlier this year after the series against West Indies. Cricket Australia informed on Monday that while Cummins will miss the AUS vs ENG 1st Test, they are optimistic of him returning to action for the 2nd Test in Brisbane.

Cummins ruled out of Ashes 1st Test

Speaking to reporters, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald claimed that Cummins had run out of time to recover in time for the 1st Test. Providing an update on his recovery, the coach stated that Cummins is expected to resume bowling this week, while also adding that while losing a captain wasn’t ideal, it wasn’t a bad idea to have Scott Boland as Cummins’ replacement for the 1st Test.

We flagged it, that [lead-time of] four-plus weeks to get him up and running, we’ve just run out of time. But we are really optimistic for the second Test. Losing your captain is not ideal, but when you think about Scott Boland being the potential replacement, it’s not terrible,” McDonald said.

Steve Smith will lead Australia in the Ashes opener in the absence of Cummins. Two weeks ago, , Cummins stated that four weeks time was pretty tight for him to recover fully adding that he has started running and pushing himself. The Australian skipper revealed that he was yet to start bowling in the nets, and that he was at least a couple of weeks away before he could do so. Pat acknowledged that it would be very tough for him to picture playing all five Tests in the Ashes at the moment, especially since he is taking it slow in terms of resuming bowling.
