DRS, Nov 16: No new CSK captain, KKR moment that led to Samson’s RR departure & Gill fitness update

At least, we have retention and release lists for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. Sanju Samson, who was traded to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), won’t be named captain. We also know why he left the Rajasthan Royals (RR) now. We also have two international news items. Shubman Gill has injured himself, while Babar Azam has created history for Pakistan.

IPL 2026 retention & release lists

The retention and release lists for the IPL 2026 auction are out. Teams have released 83 players, out of which Andre Russell, Matheesha Pathirana, and Ravi Bishnoi are the biggest surprises. While Mayank Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kagiso Rabada, and T Natarajan are some of the interesting retentions.

Shami, Jadeja & Samson trades confirmed

A total of 8 trades happened before the deadline of the IPL 2026 retentions. Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to RR for Sanju Samson to CSK was the biggest. Mohammed Shami was the other big one, as he moved from SRH to LSG. MI was involved in half of the trades.

Why Samson left RR

After Sanju Samson was traded to CSK, RR lead owner Manoj Badale revealed that the wicketkeeper had already expressed the desire to leave the franchise during IPL 2025. After losing a match against KKR, Samson approached Badale and told him it was time to move on.

Shubman Gill injury update

Shubman Gill has been admitted to the hospital after suffering a neck injury during the Kolkata Test. Having woken up with a stiff neck, the Indian Test captain injured himself while playing a shot and left the field. Gill might stay in the hospital overnight and could miss the remainder of the match.

Gaikwad to continue as CSK captain

Moments after Sanju Samson was traded to CSK, the 5-time champions announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad would continue as captain. Due to the trade, many felt that Samson would be CSK’s wicketkeeper and skipper soon, but it looks like that won’t be happening, at least in IPL 2026.

Babar Azam hits 20th ODI hundred

Babar Azam now holds the record for ODI hundreds for Pakistan. The batter hadn’t scored an international hundred for 807 days and finally broke the drought against South Africa to score his 20th ODI hundred. Babar ties Saeed Anwar, who also has 20 centuries, but in 108 more innings.
