DRS, Nov 17: Gill back from hospital, Gambhir’s confusing pitch statement & Karun Nair misses out
All that could go wrong went wrong for India in the Kolkata Test. A lot’s been said. Mostly about the pitch, from Gautam Gambhir and other Indian cricket greats. Away from all of this, the Ranji Trophy was underway, and we have some updates regarding that. Lastly, we have some positive news regarding Shubman Gill.

India’s shocking Kolkata defeat
Despite gaining a 30-run lead, India lost the Kolkata Test by 30 runs. It marked the fourth defeat at home in the last six matches as Temba Bavuma and Simon Harmer came together to take South Africa to victory. The reigning WTC champions didn’t let India chase 124, winning the match in 8 innings at the Eden Gardens.

Shubman Gill injury update
Shubman Gill has been discharged from the hospital. The India Test captain stayed under observation overnight after suffering a neck injury on the second day of the Kolkata Test. At the moment, it’s uncertain whether Gill will travel with the Indian team to Guwahati.

Gambhir got what he wanted
After many criticised the Eden Gardens pitch, Gautam Gambhir confirmed that Team India wanted the pitch that was delivered. The Indian head coach didn’t think the pitch was unplayable and believed that the Indian batters simply didn’t apply themselves correctly. Former India cricketer Anil Kumble was left confused by Gambhir’s comment about requesting a pitch like that.

Making mockery of Test cricket
Harbhajan Singh was extreme in his criticism of the Eden Gardens pitch. He stated that such surfaces will lead to the end of Test cricket, with matches ending in 2-3 days. The former Indian spinners further added that even legends like Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli wouldn’t have been able to survive in Kolkata.

Ranji Trophy round up
While all the attention was on the Kolkata Test, Arshin Kulkarni scored his maiden first-class hundred against Punjab. His Maharashtra teammate Prithvi Shaw scores his third fifty of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. Karnataka’s Karun Nair missed out on another hundred against Chandigarh after scoring 174* against Goa and 233 against Kerala.

Ganguly’s advice to Gambhir
After South Africa beat India in Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly offered his advice to Gautam Gambhir. The former India captain urged the head coach to prepare batting pitches for future Test matches. Ganguly added that scores of 350-400 should be the norm and Gambhir should back his bowlers to win matches on such tracks.
