Pat Cummins hopeful of return for second Ashes Test in Brisbane after missing Australia squad

Australia captain Pat Cummins has offered a positive update on his recovery from a back injury, saying he is targeting a comeback for the second Ashes Test against England in Brisbane. The 32-year-old was ruled out of the series opener in Perth as he continues to rebuild his bowling workload after a lengthy layoff.

Cummins, who led Australia to the World Test Championship (WTC) title in 2023 and in the final earlier this year, has been out of competitive action for several months. The fast bowler confirmed he will travel with the team to Perth to continue training and assess his fitness ahead of the Gabba Test, which begins on December 4.

I don’t really want to commit to anything this far out,” Cummins told Channel 7. “I’m pretty keen to play as much as I can, but realistically, if we have a big game and I bowl 40 or 50 overs and then there’s a game that starts a few days later, it might be a bridge too far.

“I’m trying to get right, and if I get right then hopefully, I’ll try to play most of it as I can. That’s the aim and we’re building our plan to the second Test. It’s probably not until you get a bit closer that you can really know where you’re at. We’re trying to keep that second Test as a live option. I’ll have a really good bowl in Perth, and by then I’ll know where I’m at.”

Easy pace options for AUS sans Cummins

With Cummins sidelined, Steve Smith will continue to lead the side in the first Test. The selectors have included Scott Boland, Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett as pace options alongside obvious choices of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Boland is likely to feature, given his impressive record in home conditions, while Cameron Green’s ability to bowl remains under assessment. While he has started to bowl in Sheffield Shield cricket.

Cummins also shared encouraging details about his progress in the nets, saying his rhythm and pace are improving steadily. “It’s been really good. Yesterday was probably a three-quarter run-up for seven or eight overs, and it’s all feeling good so I’m on track. It’s probably better than expected,” he said.

“(I’m bowling) at about 115 or 120 km/h. Each session is incremental so it’ll be a little bit more intense, and once I go over to Perth it should be pretty close to a full run-up. It’s absolutely fine. There’s no stress so far. I’ve had the same injury a few times – albeit quite a while ago – so I know what to expect.”

If Cummins proves his fitness in time, he is expected to return for the day-night Test at the Gabba from December 4–8, a venue where England have not won a Test in almost last 40 years.
