Mobile Legends Developer Moonton to be Sold for $7 Billion to Saudi-Based Company

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is in advanced talks to sell its gaming subsidiary, Moonton Technology, to Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group. Moonton is best known as the developer of the incredibly popular mobile MOBA, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB). If the deal goes through, it would mark one of the largest acquisitions in mobile gaming history, with a price tag estimated between $6 billion and $7 billion.

As per the report from Reuters, it indicates that ByteDance and Savvy Games Group have already reached an initial agreement on the broad terms. The deal is moving quickly and could be finalized as early as the end of this quarter.

This sale represents a major strategic shift for ByteDance. The company acquired Moonton in 2021 to compete with Tencent in the gaming space. However, ByteDance is now reportedly retreating from the video game market to focus on its core businesses, such as short-form video and AI.

On the other side, Savvy Games Group, owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), continues its aggressive expansion. They already hold stakes in major giants like Nintendo, EA, and Activision Blizzard, solidifying their position as a global gaming powerhouse.

For the millions of players logging into the Land of Dawn every day, the big question is: will this change the game? The short answer is no.

Acquisitions at this level are usually about ownership and financial growth, not about changing how the game runs day-to-day. Moonton has operated independently since ByteDance bought it, and it is expected to continue doing so under Savvy Games Group.

Moreover, Savvy has a history of acquiring studios to boost the gaming ecosystem, not to micromanage development. Players should not worry about sudden changes to gameplay, heroes, or events. If anything, backing from a gaming-focused giant like Savvy could mean even larger budget esports tournaments and better regional support in the future.

Neither company has released an official statement yet, but with negotiations in the final stages, an announcement is likely imminent. We will keep you updated as more details emerge.
