Will Abhishek Sharma play IND vs PAK T20 World Cup match? Varun Chakaravarthy breaks silence

Sanju Samson was given a lucky break as he made his T20 World Cup 2026 debut in the India vs Namibia game. His inclusion came as India lost Abhishek Sharma for the match due to a stomach infection. Samson, being another attacking opener, slotted right back in. However, whether Sanju Samson continues with the team depends solely on Abhishek’s health, which thankfully looks much better now.

Star spinner Varun Chakaravarthy was quizzed about Abhishek’s health after India thrashed Namibia by 93 runs, their biggest T20 World Cup win (by runs remaining). Chakaravarthy shared a positive response, stating that Abhishek could very well play against Pakistan. India travel to Colombo to lock horns with Pakistan on February 15.

“I think he will play the next match. As far as I have spoken to him, he looks good. He did some practice today also. He told me he is on the way,” Chakaravarthy said while speaking to reporters on Thursday night. Abhishek was present at the Arun Jaitley Stadium during the match and seemed fine. However, he has lost a few kilograms of weight. India would take a call on his comeback considering how he fares in training sessions in Colombo.

Are injury problems going away from India now?

If Abhishek recovers in time for the Colombo leg, India would have navigated through their early fitness troubles without too much damage. Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the USA game due to illness, returned to the XI in Delhi and looked sharp straight away. He finished with 1 for 20 from his four overs and even pulled off a sharp diving catch in the field.

Washington Sundar, who had been sidelined with a side strain and wasn’t part of the squad in Mumbai, has also rejoined the team. Though he didn’t play, he was back with the group and going through his routines on the sidelines. He can play in Colombo, considering the pitch there would aid spinners.

Abhishek’s first T20 World Cup experience hasn’t gone to plan so far. On debut against the USA, he was out for a golden duck, caught at deep cover. Things didn’t improve from there. He fell ill with a stomach bug later that night, required hospital care, and subsequently missed India’s next game against Namibia.
