T20 World Cup final: Air India & Akasa Airline to arrange extra flights to Ahmedabad

The buzz around the T20 World Cup final has taken over the city of Ahmedabad. With India set to face New Zealand on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, thousands of fans are scrambling to reach the city. Airlines have taken note and are doing their best to provide a solution.

As per PTI, Air India Express and Akasa Air have announced special flights to Ahmedabad to manage the sudden spike in travel demand following India’s semifinal win over England on Thursday. The additional flights will operate from major cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad, making it easier for fans to reach the venue for what promises to be a packed final.

India booked their place in the final after a run-fest over England. Sanju Samson led the charge with a fiery innings, while contributions from Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma pushed India to a massive 253. England came close in the chase through Jacob Bethell’s mind-blowing century, but India held their nerve to seal a seven-run victory.

Special flights announced as demand for Ahmedabad spikes

Air India Express confirmed that it will run additional services to Ahmedabad in response to the surge in bookings. According to the airline, the decision was taken after travel demand shot up across the country once India entered the final.

Akasa Air has also joined the effort. The airline will operate special direct flights between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on March 8 and 9. In a unique touch, Akasa plans to light up its cabins with the colours of the Indian tricolour using the Boeing Sky Interior lighting system, creating a festive atmosphere for fans travelling to watch the final. Passengers will also be able to follow live match scores during the flight through the airline’s SkyScore feature.

The effort from Indian airlines comes at a time when global travel routes are facing disruptions. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have forced several airspace closures, affecting international flight schedules. Some teams, including the West Indies, have faced delays in leaving India because their original routes passed through Dubai, a key transit hub in West Asia.
