DRS May 19: Awful Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh major update & IND vs SL series timeline confirmed
The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) put on a clinical display to break the hearts of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans. Despite no MS Dhoni in action, the emotional night at Chepauk believed in their team. However, Pat Cummins and Ishan Kishan denied CSK the celebration and confirmed the qualification to the IPL 2026 playoffs. Gujarat Titans (GT) have also qualified.

IPL 2026 qualification’ SRH and GT qualify
SRH and GT confirmed top four spots after SRH defeated CSK by 5 wickets. After Match 63 of IPL 2026, RCB became the first team to qualify for playoffs by beating PBKS by 23 runs. RCB lead with 18 points and will target a top two finish by beating SRH on May 22. GT and SRH both have 16 points and will fight RCB for Qualifier 1. PBKS sit fourth with 13 points. RR, CSK, DC, and KKR are still in contention. MI and LSG are eliminated with 8 points each from 12 games. Read more here.

Awful Ruturaj Gaikwad for CSK
Pat Cummins took 3 wickets and saved quite a few runs for SRH, while Ruturaj Gaikwad cost CSK big time. Gaikwad’s innings was the opposite of a captain’s knock. He made 15 off 21 and again struggled in the powerplay, scoring 9 from 11 balls. His 124.60 powerplay strike rate in IPL 2026 is the lowest in the league. Other CSK batters like Samson scored faster. After the powerplay Gaikwad managed just 6 off 10 before Cummins dismissed him with a bouncer. Read more here.

Window for IND vs SL Tests
India’s 2026 schedule is loaded with about 50 international games. The Test series in Sri Lanka is now set for the second half of August, between the 15th and 27th, right after the LPL ends on August 8th. These two Tests count toward the 2025-27 WTC. The three proposed T20Is for Cyclone Ditwah victims are still uncertain because of India’s packed calendar. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is in Sri Lanka and may discuss them. After Sri Lanka, India will likely tour Bangladesh in September, play Afghanistan T20Is in the UAE, and then play the Asian Games and a home series versus the West Indies. Read more here.

ICC’s meeting for WTC expansion?
The ICC was considering expanding the WTC to 12 teams and adding points for one-off Tests, but both ideas may be rejected. A working group led by Roger Twose will present recommendations at the ICC board meeting in Ahmedabad on May 30-31, after skipping the May 21 virtual meet. Expanding to include Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe is complicated because Australia, England, and Pakistan currently boycott Afghanistan. There are concerns Afghanistan could exploit the percentage points system by playing weaker sides in one-off games. The ICC will also discuss data monetisation, mobile gaming, and broadcasting rights, plus Sri Lanka Cricket’s government takeover. Read more here.

Arshdeep Singh update
Punjab Kings physio Andrew Leipus started injury concerns before the RCB match by saying Arshdeep Singh had “restrictions in his body” affecting his form. Arshdeep has 14 wickets at 34.92 with a 9.78 economy this IPL 2026. Leipus later said he feels better physically. PBKS quickly clarified Arshdeep is fully fit, training actively, and ready for key games. With India’s Afghanistan squads being picked on May 19, his workload is a factor. He’s played non-stop since January. Like Bumrah and Varun who played with niggles, franchises often push players, so BCCI may monitor Arshdeep’s fitness before selection. Read more here.

BBL in Chennai?
Cricket Australia plans to host the BBL 2026-27 opener at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, a first for the venue. A TNCA source said the game will be in the second week of December. A five-member CA team inspected Chepauk during the CSK vs SRH IPL 2026 match. CA reportedly got a positive response from the BCCI, though earlier BCCI wasn’t interested. CA hasn’t confirmed yet, saying they’re exploring Chennai with the Australian Government to strengthen India-Australia ties and are working with BCCI. Perth Scorchers could play due to the time zone and WACA’s interest from Indian businessmen. Read more here.
