DRS May 25: IPL 2026 playoffs confirmed, KKR sign new player & Rishabh Pant to part ways with LSG?
The IPL 2026 playoff fixtures are locked in now. After RCB, GT and SRH confirmed their qualification, the fourth team has been added to the fore. It is RR, who have qualified at the fourth place, with KKR and PBKS getting knocked out on last day. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant’s association with the LSG looks shaky after another disastrous campaign.

KKR sign new player
Matheesha Pathirana’s KKR debut in IPL 2026 lasted just 8 balls. After being bought for INR 18 crore following his CSK release, the Sri Lankan pacer walked off against Gujarat Titans on May 16 clutching his calf. He bowled 1.2 overs, conceded 7 runs, then stopped mid-over due to pain and left the field. KKR later ruled him out for the season with a hamstring injury and replaced him with Luvnith Sisodia for INR 30 lakh. Pathirana had only just returned after a calf injury from the T20 World Cup 2026 and got clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket in April. Read more here.

Pant to be sacked?
LSG’s decision with Rishabh Pant as captain and marquee signing is under serious scrutiny after two poor seasons. They finished bottom two in IPL 2026 with just 4 wins from 14 games, despite adding big names like Kane Williamson, Tom Moody and Bharat Arun. Moody admitted the franchise is considering a ‘reset’ and said Pant found captaincy challenging, which may have affected his batting. Bought for INR 27 crore as the IPL’s most expensive player, Pant was expected to deliver runs, leadership and star power. Instead his numbers dropped from 1538 runs at 168 strike rate between 2017-2019 to 581 runs at 135 in 2025-2026. Read more here.

Rishabh Pant’s cryptic tweet
Rishabh Pant’s time as LSG captain looks shaky after another poor season. Under him LSG finished 10th in 2025 and 7th in 2026, missing playoffs both times. Bought for Rs 27 crore, he managed only 269 and 312 runs across the two years, falling short as both batter and leader. After LSG’s last game, Pant posted an emotional Instagram thank you to fans and staff, saying he learned a lot personally. However, one line caught attention where he dubbed himself as grateful to have shared this journey with incredible people. With LSG director Tom Moody hinting at a leadership reset, fans read it as a subtle goodbye note. Read more here.

Suryakumar Yadav defends poor form
Suryakumar Yadav finished IPL 2026 with a decent knock that got his campaign saved somewhat. His T20I form has dipped sharply since he became India captain in July 2024. IPL 2025 was the only bright spot. India won the T20 World Cup 2026, but he struggled through it with the lowest strike rate among Indian batters with 25 plus runs. His IPL 2026 with the Mumbai Indians was poor too, finishing below every MI batter with 10 plus runs on average. BCCI is now reportedly discussing his future with the T20 cycle restarting in June. Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma are being considered as replacements. However, Surya insists he’s fine, says he had a good World Cup. He also denied any wrist injury. Read more here.

Sachin Tendulkar lauds son Arjun
Arjun Tendulkar finally got his LSG debut in IPL 2026 against PBKS on May 23 and returned 1/36 in four overs plus 5 not out. He last played in the IPL for Mumbai Indians in 2023. Sachin Tendulkar posted a proud note on X, praising Arjun for staying patient and working hard all season despite waiting till the last game for a chance. He told him to stay grounded and keep loving cricket. LSG’s season ended early anyway, finishing last with 4 wins from 14 games, even with stars like Pant, Pooran and Marsh in the squad.
