DRS, May 28: New LSG coach, Suryakumar Yadav to play vs Uganda & is Rahul Dravid joining CSK?

CSK coach update
CSK haven’t decided on Stephen Fleming’s future yet. He’s been head coach since 2008 and part of all 5 IPL title wins with MS Dhoni. But the last 3 seasons have been rough. CSK finished 5th, 10th and 8th, winning just 17 of 42 games. Fans want Fleming out after another poor IPL 2026 hit by injuries. Rumours linked Rahul Dravid to the job after he left Rajasthan Royals, but CEO Kasi Viswanathan denied any talks and said no call has been made. Fleming also coaches Texas Super Kings in MLC and Joburg Super Kings in SA20. CSK haven’t ruled out Dhoni taking a coaching role either. Read more here.

Suryakumar Yadav update
Suryakumar Yadav isn’t taking a break. Reports say India’s T20I captain will play for Triumph Knight Mumbai North East against Uganda on May 30 in Mumbai, just before India’s Ireland and England series. Uganda is touring Mumbai for 50-over games and T20s against local T20 Mumbai League teams. MCA officials say having Surya in the game will boost morale for domestic players and give bench strength valuable exposure. For Surya, it’s a chance to find form after a poor IPL 2026 where he made only 270 runs in 14 games. Read more here.

New LSG management shuffle?
LSG’s decline since IPL 2024 has been brutal. After making playoffs in their first two seasons, they’ve fallen apart under Justin Langer, winning just 17 of 42 matches. The trouble started when Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir left after 2023, then KL Rahul clashed with owner Sanjiv Goenka and exited. Rishabh Pant came in for 27 crore, Zaheer Khan joined as mentor, but LSG finished 7th in 2025 and bottom in 2026. With Zaheer and assistants gone, Tom Moody is now director of cricket and Kane Williamson advisor. Langer’s job is under threat, and Williamson could take over as coach, mentor, or batting coach. Afghanistan prepare for India
Afghanistan’s team has left for India for a multi-format tour starting June 6. They’ll play a one-off Test in New Chandigarh, which isn’t part of the WTC, followed by a 3-match ODI series, with Hashmatullah Shahidi captaining in Tests. Rashid Khan won’t feature in the Test due to fitness issues and IPL duties with Gujarat Titans, who play Qualifier 1 on May 29. Azmatullah Omarzai will join the squad in India after Punjab Kings’ IPL exit on May 23. He brings experience from Mullanpur, the venue for the Test and one of PBKS’s home grounds. Read more here.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi special
Vaibhav Suryavanshi looked fearless in SRH vs RR Eliminator at Mullanpur. The 15-year-old walked in under huge pressure but didn’t flinch. Pat Cummins tried yorkers early, but one missed and Suryavanshi launched him for six. He then smashed 3 sixes in a row off Cummins to become the youngest to 600 IPL runs in a season and the first ever to do it at a 200+ strike rate. He also broke Chris Gayle’s 2012 record with 60 sixes this year. His swivel pull six gave him the joint-fastest playoff fifty, equalling Suresh Raina’s 12-year record. When bowlers missed by an inch, he sent it into the stands. Read more here.

Angry Glenn Phillips
Glenn Phillips hadn’t played for GT since April 20, but was still sent to the post-match presser after their Qualifier 1 loss to RCB. He didn’t feature in the XI or as impact sub in the 254-run chase. One question, however, got to him. A reporter asked if GT gave up chasing such a big total when they lost early wickets. Phillips snapped back, calling it “silly” and “terrible”. He said no pro cricketer goes in to give up, and GT tried everything but chasing 250 needs everything to go right. GT retained him despite a 2025 groin injury, but he’s managed only 67 runs in 6 games this season and hasn’t bowled. Sending a benched player instead of someone from the playing XI looked odd.
