IPL 2026 playoff qualification scenarios: CSK’s hope dwindle, RR move up

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 league stage has reached that phase where every result will have its effect in the playoff race. Some teams are cruising, some are hanging on, and a few are already staring at the exit door. While nothing is officially sealed yet, the Gujarat Titans (GT) have won 8 matches and are on 16 points. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are on top again, while Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are trailing them both.

What teams need to qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?

Traditionally, the qualification mark in a 10-team IPL sits around 16 points. Get to eight wins, and you are almost always through. 14 points can sometimes be enough, but that depends heavily on net run rate and how congested the table is. However, other results also matter in this, and luck plays a factor. Don’t expect anything with 12 points. SRH were the only exception in IPL 2019 when they qualified with 12 points, but back then, there were eight teams.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Qualification chances – 16 Points in 12 games

  • Top 2 – likely
  • Top 4 – almost confirmed

RCB might have lost a few matches in between but are still in a very strong position to make the playoffs. They have three matches left, and a win will just take them through.

Gujarat Titans (GT) Qualification chances – 16 Points in 12 games

  • Top 2 – likely
  • Top 4 – almost confirmed

GT have revived their campaign with 5 consecutive wins and are tied with RCB. With 2 games left, they are on 16 points and virtually in the playoffs. One win, and they could be strong contenders for a top-2 finish. They have matches left against KKR and CSK now.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – 14 Points in 12 games

  • Top 4 – very likely
  • Strong playoff push

A bad loss to GT still has not changed much for SRH. They are still on third position, but they would like to get to 16 points, as soon as possible. They have two more matches left.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) Qualification chances – 13 Points in 12 games

  • Top 2 – looks tough
  • Top 4 – very much possible

Punjab Kings (PBKS) started their campaign with a seven-match winning streak. The Shreyas Iyer-led side looked certain to qualify for the playoffs. However, they have now lost 5 on the trot. To attain 16 points, PBKS needs to win their remaining matches. That should most likely get them through, since they are at an odd number of points. They need to arrest the slide and return to winning ways.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) – 12 Points in 11 games

  • Top 2 – Possible
  • Top 4 – Possible

With 3 matches left, they likely need all 3 games to reach 18 points and guarantee qualification. Two wins might take them to 16, but anything less could drag them into the NRR battle. However, one fascinating thing about them is that RR’s all remaining games are against oppositions that are below them on the points table.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – 12 Points in 12 games

  • Top 2 – Very tough
  • Top 4 – Tough

CSK are still alive, but the equation is tough now. They need to win both matches to reach 16 points. One win (14 points) most likely won’t be enough unless other results go their way. The good part is their NRR is positive, which keeps them in the mix. However, even if they win all of their games, qualification isn’t guaranteed.

Delhi Capitals (DC) – 10 Points in 12 games

  • Top 2 – No chance
  • Top 4 – Virtually out

Despite beating PBKS in Dharamshala, it’s almost impossible for DC to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs. Delhi needs at least one of RCB, GT, PBKS, and SRH to not win any more matches. CSK and RR can’t win more than one game and must end with a worse NRR, and KKR can’t win more than 2 matches.

  • Minimum more points needed for 16 points: can’t get there

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – 9 Points in 11 games

  • Top 2 – Leave it
  • Top 4 – No chance

KKR’s campaign has gone off track. Even if they win their remaining matches, they’ll get to 15 points. One more defeat will almost certainly end their chances. At this stage, qualification looks highly unlikely.

Mumbai Indians (MI) – 8 Points in 12 games

  • Eliminated

Mumbai were strong on paper and that’s it. With just four wins in 12 games, their maximum possible points tally is 12. Hardik Pandya’s side has lacked confidence and performance on the field and they are out after a tight loss to RCB in Raipur. Even if they win their last three games, they will be pipped by other teams.

  • Knocked out

LSG is knocked out. Even if they win their remaining matches, they’ll reach 12 points.

IPL 2026 Playoff format explained

  • The IPL playoffs system rewards teams finishing in the top two. Qualifier 1 is played between the top two teams, with the winner going straight to the final. The loser gets another chance in Qualifier 2
  • The Eliminator is played between the third and fourth-placed teams, where the loser is knocked out. The winner then faces the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2.
  • The final is then played between the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.

That is why finishing in the top two is such a big advantage. And as things stand, PBKS, RCB and SRH are leading that race, while others are just trying to stay alive.
