The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to accept that something is wrong with team India despite the side losing 9 out of 10 matches in the UK. Instead, the focus now shifts to the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in which VVS Laxman will coach the young Indian side led by Shreyas Iyer. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has broken his silence on the retirement rumours and has responded in typical Hitman style. Duleep Trophy 2026 is just around the corner, and West Zone became the first side to unveil its squad. On that note, let’s take a look at the top headlines from Monday.

Rohit Sharma breaks silence on retirement

Rohit Sharma has finally spoken up about the irritating retirement buzz, that every cricket fan had been talking about, for the last three days. After the Lord’s ODI, where the 39-year-old slammed 138 in 110 deliveries, said that his job was to only bat, and not respond to the noise outside. For the unversed, during the 2nd ODI, a report from Indian Express claimed that Rohit would retire after the Lord’s match, after being forced by the selectors to do so. Read more here.

KL Rahul treated unfairly?

Former India chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes Rahul has been wasted at the position. To demote a proper batter like him and restrict him to bat alongside bowling all-rounders and tailenders doesn’t seem like proper utilisation of your resources. Srikkanth even went as far as saying that Gambhir has treated Rahul like he did Sanju Samson or Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, both of whom were dropped during the India vs England T20I series after 3 failures each. West Zone squad named

The West Zone selectors have put their faith in Ruturaj Gaikwad for the 2026 Duleep Trophy, handing the India star the captaincy of one of the tournament’s strongest squads. Shams Mulani has been named vice-captain, while the squad also features the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian. Read more here.

Mistakes India can’t repeat vs ZIM

Just like last edition, Team India will travel Zimbabwe after winning a T20 World Cup championship. However, the difference is that this Indian side will be hugely under the pump. And they have themselves to blame. After lifting the T20 World Cup 2026, India have been a shadow of themselves. The transition hasn’t been great. In fact, it has been awful. In this new era, India have been humbled by a secondary team of Ireland. Then, England dismantled India 4-0. The BCCI has said all is well but the reality is pretty different. In Tests, the Indian team is failing to win many series. In fact, under Gautam Gambhir, India have managed to win Test series against some lesser-strength sides, Bangladesh and West Indies. Winning white-ball series was his only saving grace, and now, even that is under a huge question mark after India’s horrible tour of the United Kingdom. India to play practice match in Sri Lanka

BCCI is expected to organise one practice game for the India men’s cricket team before the 2-match Test series in Sri Lanka. Team India is expected to land in the island nation on August 4 and acclimatise to the conditions. Shubman Gill’s team will play one practice match before the India vs Sri Lanka Test series commences on August 15 in Galle. From August 7 onwards, they’ll play a 4-day match at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC). Read more here.
