India plummet to all-time T20I low under Shreyas Iyer & Gautam Gambhir, register biggest defeat

The skyscraper India built during the last T20 World Cup cycle has come crashing down. Fresh off a trophy run, with an Indian Premier League (IPL) season crammed between, the world champions have now lost 4 of their last 5 matches. It’s the longest stretch without a victory for Team India in T20I cricket.

Longest winless streak for India in T20Is

  • 5* – June 2026 – July 2026 (4 defeats, 1 NR)
  • 4 – June 2009 – December 2009 (4 defeats)
  • 4 – July 2021 – October 2021 (4 defeats)

Unfortunately, that isn’t all. One can understand that several players are tired or jaded. They’ve been playing non-stop cricket since February. But nothing can justify this result. Shreyas Iyer was looking for his maiden victory as a T20I captain when Team India took the field against England at Trent Bridge on July 7. Well, he’s still searching for it.

India didn’t lose but were hammered by Harry Brook’s team in Nottingham. The Men in Blue registered their second-lowest total in T20I history. After starting well with the ball, India lost their way. The spinners weren’t great. They went for 84 runs in 7 overs. Despite bowling a maiden over, Arshdeep Singh finished with 36/0.

Prince Yadav was the standout performer, with Harshit Rana doing moderately well. England managed to cross the 200-run mark, and chasing that was going to be difficult. Perhaps not as difficult as the Indian batters made it feel. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fell to a sharp short ball from Jofra Archer, and once he departed, the floodgates opened.

It was a record-breaking game for India, just not in a good way. The Men in Blue lost 5 wickets in the powerplay, the most they’ve ever lost. Abhishek Sharma, Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel and Shivam all fell to short balls. Shreyas once again flicked a ball on the leg stump to the field, similar to his first Ireland dismissal. Tilak Varma also struggled against spin and was then dismissed by Will Jacks

It was as if the weakness of every Indian batter was highlighted by England. All of this ended with India losing by 125 runs, their biggest ever defeat in T20I cricket. After every game, Shreyas just comes out to say, ‘We need to start over’. Well, it’s happened 5 times now. Not one thing looks in place. It’s time for him and Gautam Gambhir to take a hard look at what’s going wrong because the knives will be out sooner than one can imagine.

Biggest defeat for India in T20Is (run-margin)

  • 76 runs vs South Africa, Ahmedabad, 2026
